Nautilus is the file manager for Unity desktop. Nautilus is the predecessor for file managers such as Nemo and Caja. Nautilus is also the file manager for GNOME Desktop, which has been renamed to Files.
Nautilus is the default GNOME file manager
A folder opens by double-clicking it when a window appears that displays its contents. Nautilus also has a browser interface. Right click on the folder and choose Browser Folder. A new Nautilus Saw will open with the same features but browser-like. Navigating through folders and files is done with the Back, Forward, and Up buttons just like in a web browser.
To move between folders, use the drop-down menu at the bottom left corner of the Nautilus window.
Here are all the parent folders of the current directory to the root of the file system.
Select the desired file and it opens in a new window above the old folder. The parent folder of the current folder opens with File-> Open Parent. If you want to close the parent folders, select File-> Close Parent Folders.
File Management:

Nautilus supports drag and drop commands to manage files. Any file on your desktop can be dragged from a window open in Nautilus and placed at the final destination. Moving files between folders is done by opening the source directory containing the file to be moved. Select File-> Open Location, enter the path to the destination directory, and drag the files to be moved into the Nautilus window containing the destination directory. Files and folders can also be moved between a Nautilus window and a desktop.
Multiple copies of a file are created with Edit-> Duplicate. Cut, copy, and paste operations are run from the Edit menu or right-click on the file icon and select the action from the context menu that appears. Rename a file by right-clicking on it and selecting Rename.
Nautilus supports browsing files on a network. The connection to the server (FTP, SSH, HTTP, Samba, etc.) is done using File-> Connect to Server. The server type you are connecting to, the name of the folder to be visited, the port number and the user name are required. The dialog ends with Connect and the network folder is displayed as part of the Places panel and appears as a desktop icon. Close the connection by right-clicking on the desktop icon and selecting Unmount Volume.
Nautilus has the ability to write CDs. If you created a folder that contains the backup data on the CD, browse to the Places-> CD Creator sequence and drag the folder containing the data into the CD/DVD Creator window. Select File-> Write to Disc to copy data to CD or DVD.
