Kubuntu is a free operating system based on the Linux kernel and the KDE desktop interface. Kubuntu is licensed and distributed as open source under the GNU Project’s own General Public License.
It is a Linux distribution that wants to be a free alternative to Microsoft Windows and comes with an extensive array of software, such as an Internet browser, a document writer, a spreadsheet generator and a software to create presentation, that are being offered as free alternatives to Word, Excel, and Powerpoint in the Microsoft Office suite, an instant messaging client, multimedia applications to playback media files such as movies and pictures, and many other useful utilities, all offered for free, as they are created as open source software projects. Kubuntu is a secure and stable operating system, being immune to Windows viruses, as it uses a different shell structure and files are executed differently.
KDE GUI
KDE is created and maintained as a collective effort of hundreds of programmers and artists with the joint vision of creating a modern and efficient work environment using open source software.
If we are talking about a learning curve, KDE has the fastest accommodating period of all work environments based on the Linux kernel, allowing the customization the needs and wishes of every individual user through add-on apps and plug-ins, giving them full freedom when they arrange their workspace area while providing a wide range of tools that enhance functionality.
The KDE team develops the vast majority of Kubuntu default software programs, allowing a seamless blending with the work environment, creating the ultimate experience that is defined by fluidity and productivity.
Through the KDE plasma workspace, a KDE framework software, we can create graphical user interfaces for different peripherals.
Plasma Desktop was developed as a workspace environment that reached maturity with the release of SC KDE 4.2, targeted towards desktop computers and laptops.
The default configuration interface is very similar and resembles the developing form of the KDE Software Compilation and Microsoft Windows desktop, but with extended configuration options allowing radical deviations from the default layout.
The install medium comes both as a CD/DVD form, or you can download it from the internet, also featuring a live version that allows you to test and use various features before installing the operating system. More specifically, just by inserting the CD and rebooting the computer, you can see and play on the Kubuntu live version, which is loaded into your computer RAM, without writing anything on the HDD.
We need to take into consideration that both Ubuntu and Kubuntu are part of the same distribution family, that is based on Debian, but with a different shell and GUI. There are no substantial differences in performance between them, but instead they are intended for different usage, that’s why it is important that each user chooses an interface that is more convenient for them, but on usage but also resource utilization of their computer, as not all computers have the technical capabilities to run each feature of Kubuntu.
Kubuntu benefits from the Ubuntu distribution development program and offers support for security updates (in addition to other benefits).
As with Ubuntu, every six months a new Kubuntu version is launched with modern updates of everything that is considered the latest stable version. These versions receive technical support and security updates for nine months since the date of appearance. Kubuntu 18.10 is the latest version.
